Convergence of AI, DH, and English Studies

Organised by DoE, MKBU

Participated in a National Seminar hosted by Smt. Sujata Binoy Gardi, Department of English, M.K. Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar. The seminar, titled 'Convergence of AI, DH, and English Studies,' was conducted in a hybrid mode. The event commenced with a cordial welcome from the Head of the Department and Professor Dr. Dilip Barad. Distinguished speakers included Prof. (Dr.) Nigam Dave, Director of the School of Liberal Studies and Dean of International Relations at PDEU, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, delivered a thought-provoking session on the Value Neutrality of Deepfake and its Positive Implications. Dr. Richa Srishti, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Languages at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Lavasa, Pune, Maharashtra, explored the Role of AI in the Creative Process and Redefined Authorship. Dr. Richa Mishra, Chairperson of the Board of Studies and Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Institute of Technology, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, offered insights into Engaging with Digital Humanities: Tools, Techniques and Scope. Finally, Dr. Shobha K.N., Associate Professor of English at NTTTR, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, discussed the application of AI for Teaching and Learning.

Prof. (Dr.) Nigam Dave on Value Neutrality of Deepfake and its Positive Implications


The first session started with a question: Why do we call the swapping of images or videos "deepfake" and not "Synthetic Media"? We discussed the background of Deepfake and pondered whether deepfakes could shake up global governance. If yes, what can we do to stop it? If not, what have we missed in raising awareness about Deepfake?

We talked about fake identities, a concept rooted in Indian myths. Stories like Chavan Rudhi and Sukanya, and the legend behind Chavanprash, showed how old this idea is. Examples like Ravan becoming a golden deer and Arjuna disguising as Brihanala highlighted that deepfake isn't new; it's how we interpret things that's the problem.

These examples show how things are duplicated, copied, or altered to look like the original, which is the basic idea behind Deepfake - manipulating or changing something to mislead others about someone or something.

Dr. Richa Mishra on Engaging with Digital Humanities: Tools, Techniques and Scope
In her presentation, she delved into the myriad tools, techniques, and scopes within the realm of Digital Humanities (DH) as a researcher. The session commenced with an observation on the prevalence of theoretical research over practical production in the Indian DH landscape. It provided a comprehensive background on the emergence of Digital Humanities, highlighting key figures in the field. CLICK HERE

Furthermore, the talk explored the contrasting patterns between traditional research methodologies and those employed in DH. Analogous to traditional research, DH research encompasses digitized data, born-digital content, and data revitalized in digital formats. This comparison sheds light on the evolving nature of research methodologies in the digital age.



Additionally, the session delved into various research techniques pivotal to Digital Humanities, including:

1. Text Mining & Analysis: Uncovering patterns, trends, and insights from large volumes of textual data through computational methods.
2. Data Visualization: Presenting complex data in visual formats to facilitate understanding and interpretation.
3. Geospatial Analysis: Analyzing spatial data to reveal geographical patterns, relationships, and trends.
4. Network Analysis: Studying the connections and relationships between entities within a network to discern patterns and structures.
5. Corpus Linguistics: Analyzing large collections of text (corpora) to study language patterns, usage, and evolution.
6. Text Encoding and Markup: Employing markup languages to encode and structure textual data for analysis and presentation.

These techniques underscore the interdisciplinary nature of Digital Humanities, leveraging computational tools to explore and understand humanistic inquiries in novel and insightful ways.

Furthermore, the session highlighted a plethora of tools essential for implementing these techniques:

1. Hermeneutim: An advanced tool facilitating text analysis and interpretation, aiding researchers in uncovering deeper meanings and insights within textual data.
2. Tupor.ca: A comprehensive platform offering a range of tools for textual analysis, enabling researchers to explore linguistic patterns, sentiment analysis, and more.
3. Hypothes.is: A collaborative annotation tool allowing users to annotate and discuss digital documents, fostering collaborative research and knowledge sharing.
4. Recognition: A tool specializing in optical character recognition (OCR), converting scanned documents and images into editable and searchable text, thus facilitating text mining and analysis.
and many more. The session also introduced other tools tailored to specific research needs, including data visualization platforms, geospatial analysis software, network analysis tools, and text encoding software.

Dr. Richa Srishti on The Role of AI in the Creative Process and Redefined Authorship
The session commenced with fundamental inquiries: Can AI truly embody the essence of an author? Will AI revolutionize the very concept of authorship? Let us delve into the roots of these terms, beginning with the etymology of 'Artificial' and 'Intelligence'.

The term 'Artificial' traces its origins to the Latin word 'Artificium', derived from 'ars' meaning 'arts or skills', and 'facere' signifying 'to make or create'. When merged, they epitomize the notion of crafting or creating with skill. On the other hand, 'Intelligence' stems from 'Intelligentia', originating from 'inter' meaning 'between or among', and 'legere' connoting 'to choose or read'. Collectively, they encompass the capacity to understand and discern. the term "author," derived from 'auctor', which embodies the concept of a creator, someone who fashions something out of nothingness.


In her address, Ma'am delved into the profound implications of AI's learning capabilities, noting that AI is progressively absorbing and adapting to human commands and behaviors, even learning from our mistakes when they are pointed out. Drawing parallels with historical figures like Einstein and Ada Lovelace, she emphasized the potential for AI to be regarded as genuine authors, akin to their human counterparts. Moreover, she underscored the collaborative potential between humans and AI in creative endeavors, citing various online AI tools tailored for collaborative writing experiences.

Show casing various examples of poems and images, challenging the audience to discern between those created by humans and those generated by AI. She recommended a range of online AI tools such as Verse by Verse, ChatGPT, and AI Dungeon for generating poetry, prose, and images collaboratively.

 

One term that resonated strongly in her discourse was "Scriptor," as coined by Ronald Barths. According to Barths, a Scriptor possesses the ability to rearrange existing text in novel ways, a notion that aligns with AI's capacity to generate content based on learned patterns and inputs.

The session emphasized collaboration between human creativity and technology's capabilities, following insights from Salman Rushdie and Kevin Kelly. Rushdie noted AI's challenge to unoriginal writers, suggesting it doesn't threaten all human creativity. Kelly reframed the narrative from competition to collaboration, advocating a "race with robots" mindset. This approach encourages leveraging AI's strengths to enhance human innovation, fostering a synergistic relationship rather than a competitive one.


Dr. Shobha K.N. on AI for Teaching and Learning.
The speaker began by tracing the evolution of technology in education, highlighting milestones from the printing press to the World Wide Web. She emphasized that AI, despite its recent surge in popularity, has been under development for a significant period. The journey of technological advancement in education, starting from early computing to machine learning and Deep Learning, was illustrated. Drawing an analogy from sports, she illustrated how evolving technology offers educators new opportunities akin to athletes setting new records. Three exemplary educators—Benjamin Bloom with Bloom's Taxonomy, Sal Khan with Khan Academy, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI—were cited for providing frameworks for AI-integrated teaching, spanning mathematics to literature. 



The speaker advocated for teacher training in AI through courses available on platforms like Coursera. Emphasizing the need for educators to familiarize themselves with AI, she recommended various AI tools for lesson planning, including Pictory, InvideoAI, Tome, SlideAI, Gamma, Eduaideai, Twee, Magicschool.Ai, Alayna.Ai, Preplexity, Curipod, and autoclassmate. Positioning AI as an opportunity that democratizes technology, she highlighted its potential for personalized teaching and learning, heralding a transformative shift in education.

Introduction
Throughout history, there have been moments of great change that have transformed society and culture. Two of these watershed moments were the invention of the printing press and the discovery of the New World. The printing press revolutionized communication, literacy, and knowledge, enabling the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the rise of mass media. Similarly, the discovery of the New World exposed the limitations of conventional knowledge, reconfigured the earth's surface, enabled the rise of rationality and its connection to barbarism, and provided the seedbed for colonialism and the modern nation-state.

Both of these historical events were made possible by networking technologies that disseminated knowledge into new cultural and social spheres, bringing people, nations, cultures, and languages together. These technologies include seafaring, railways, the postal system, the electric telegraph, world standard time, colonization, the exploitation of the natural world, electrification, highways and car culture, transnational finance and technology, radio, film, television, the Internet, and real-time social networking on hand-held devices.

Every technology has both good and bad effects. It can help to share information and connect people, but it can also be used to control and exclude. This is true for all kinds of technology, like printing, radio, phones, TV, the internet, ships, trains, roads, and more. We cannot assume that technology will always make life better for everyone. For example, even though mobile phones and social media can be used to spread knowledge and democracy, they can also be used to spread hate and violence. In the same way, the radio and trains were used in the past to help people communicate and travel, but they were also used to hurt and conquer others.

When we talk about technology, we also need to think about how power and authority play a role. The way we use technology can help or harm people, depending on how it is used and who is in charge. We need to be aware of these issues and think carefully about how we use technology to make sure it helps everyone.

Today, we are experiencing rapid changes brought about by new communication technologies such as social networking, cloud computing, web-based media, digital archives, locative technologies, and mixed realities. These changes are so significant that they can be compared to the encounter with the New World and the dissemination of printing. However, the pace of these developments is much faster than the ones we experienced in the past, taking place over months and years rather than decades and centuries. Because of the speed of these changes, we have only just begun to develop the intellectual tools, methodologies, and disciplinary practices needed to respond to, engage with, and interpret these massive transformations.

Furthermore, we have yet to fully appreciate the profound disciplinary, methodological, and institutional shifts that are occurring as print culture is enhanced and displaced by the emergence of natively digital culture.

Rise of DH and related Issues
The author of this text is reflecting on the future of Comparative Literature in the 21st century and how to move away from the dominance of print media. The author draws inspiration from scholar N. Katherine Hayles, who challenges the field to consider the interplay between a text's physical characteristics and its meaning-making practices. The author argues that we can no longer assume that the medium of literary artifacts or scholarship is exclusively print, as digital media have transformed the ways we produce and study literature.

These practices involve collaboration between people from different fields, such as humanists, technologists, librarians, and social scientists. Digital Humanities projects are often collaborative and engage with a wider audience than traditional academic research. The role of the humanist is critical in this historic moment as our cultural legacy moves to digital formats, and our relationship to knowledge, technology, and society changes. The Digital Humanities expand on traditional humanistic inquiry and help us understand, critique, compare, historicize, and evaluate digital publications and the platforms that support them.

Role of humanist
The 'Digital Humanities' refers to interdisciplinary practices that create and analyze new and old information technologies. These practices involve collaboration between humanists, technologists, librarians, social scientists, artists, architects, information scientists, and computer scientists. The projects are designed to reach a broader public than traditional academic research in the Humanities.

Humanists need to assert and insert themselves into the culture wars of the 21st century, which are largely being defined, fought, and won by corporate interests. For example, when Google won the right to transfer the copyright of orphaned books to itself, why were humanists, foundations, and universities silent? Similarly, when Sony and Disney restricted intellectual property and copyright with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, why were they not more vocal?

The 'Digital Humanities Manifesto' calls on humanists to engage more deeply with digital culture production, publishing, access, and ownership. If new technologies are dominated and controlled by corporate and entertainment interests, it is important to ask who will render our cultural legacy in new media formats, and for whom? These are questions that Humanists must urgently ask and answer. Jeffrey Schnapp is a scholar who has written extensively on these issues.

The Digital Humanities Manifesto is a document that calls for humanists to be engaged in the digital revolution happening in the 21st century. The manifesto is not a systematic analysis of the state of humanities but rather a call to action and a provocation. It seeks to transform and debate ideas within the humanities. The manifesto is available in many forums online, with different versions and commentaries created by scholars, students, and the general public. The manifesto advocates for participatory humanities scholarship in the expanded public sphere. It calls for humanists to guide the reshaping of the university in creative ways that facilitate the responsible production, curation, and dissemination of knowledge. The manifesto does not provide answers, but rather it examines the explanatory power, relevance, and cogency of established organizations of knowledge and imagines creative possibilities and futures built on humanistic traditions. The manifesto argues that the work of the humanities is more necessary than ever for developing thoughtful responses, purposeful interpretations, trenchant critiques, and creative alternatives. However, this cannot be done while locked into restrictive disciplinary and institutional structures, singular media forms, and conventional expectations about the purview, function, and work of the Humanities. Robert Darnton points out that this is the beginning of the fourth information age, not the first.

Role of society in the Information age?
The author is saying that we are currently in the fifth decade of the fourth information age in human history. They believe that we need to understand the field of Comparative Literature and the Humanities from an information and media-specific perspective. They also suggest that we need to come to terms with the difference between our digital age and everything that came before it.

Although the Internet is only forty years old and the World Wide Web is only two decades old, there is already an incredible amount of data produced. There are more than twenty-one billion indexed web pages, over one trillion URLs indexed by Google, more than ten million books scanned and cataloged by Google, more than a hundred thirty million blogs indexed by Technorati, over six million articles on JSTOR, and more than twenty-five billion pieces of content on Facebook, including photos, videos, news stories, and blog posts. There are also billions of photographs on Flickr, and fifty-five million tweets per day on Twitter, which are now archived and cataloged by the Library of Congress. All of this content, particularly textual and visual data, is being produced, shared, consumed, and archived at an exponential rate compared to anything in the history of humanity. The author suggests that we need to understand this new reality and its impact on our understanding of culture and literature.

This passage discusses how the field of Comparative Literature has expanded in recent years to include a variety of perspectives, including transnational studies, mobility and translation studies, and postcolonial and diaspora studies. It is not enough to simply study the impact of technology; we must actively engage with, design, create, critique, and hack the environments and technologies that facilitate this research to produce knowledge about ourselves and our world.

In today's digital age, the amount of data and cultural material available to us is vast and overwhelming. To make sense of it all, we need to use new tools that can analyze and evaluate this information. Humanists must consider using text-mining tools, machine reading, and algorithmic analyses to accomplish this task. One approach that has been suggested is 'distant reading,' which involves analyzing larger units of information to reveal their overall interconnection. According to Moretti, distant reading focuses on shapes, relations, structures, forms, and models, as opposed to deep hermeneutics, which involves extracting meaning from a text through close readings.

Another possibility is machine reading, which involves using computational methods to extract trends, correlations, and relationships from data. As Hayles points out, the sheer volume of data and cultural material available to us is far too great for us to process and make sense of without the help of a computer. Even if we were to read a book a day for our entire adult life, we would only be able to read about twenty-five thousand books, which does not include the reading and composition of digital forms of data and cultural material.

The concept of 'literature' and 'culture' has been defined and studied in the humanistic tradition through the history of writing and inscription practices, which include various forms of media such as stone carving, parchment scrolls, printed books, and digital authoring environments. However, in the fourth information age, we need to confront the specificity of the digital medium compared to other media formats and the ways of analyzing cultural knowledge produced through it. To address these questions, there are three potential futures for Comparative Literature in the Digital Age, as suggested by Jerome McGann: "The first... involves a reconceptualization of what we mean by ‘literary culture’ and the role of the literary critic within it." The second "involves creating new archives of literary and cultural materials, archives that are organized in fundamentally different ways than the archives of print culture. 'The third' involves developing new ways to create and analyze multimedia works."

These three futures for Comparative Literature in the Digital Age are not separate but rather interrelated and complementary. By reconceptualizing the role of the literary critic, creating new archives, and developing new ways of analyzing multimedia works, we can better understand the specificity of the digital medium and its impact on cultural knowledge production and reception.

Comparative Media Studies
The field of Comparative Literature has traditionally focused on the study of literary and textual works, but in recent times, there has been a shift towards incorporating other media forms like art, photography, film, and television. However, with the advent of digital media, there is a need to re-evaluate the way we approach Comparative Literature. Digital media not only changes the works we study but also the scholarly environments, tools, and platforms we use. Digital media is hypermedia and hypertextual, meaning that it uses a variety of media forms in interconnected systems that allow for annotation, indefinite growth, mutability, and non-linear navigation. This poses a challenge to Comparative Literature as it must now take into account the media-specificity of literary and cultural artifacts, including print.

Comparative Literature as Comparative Media Studies considers the formal material qualities of the surface structures upon which inscriptions are made, the technical processes of reproduction and circulation, the institutional mechanisms of dissemination and authorization, and the reading and navigation practices enabled by the media form. It investigates all media as information and knowledge systems that are intertwined with histories of power, institutions, and governing and regulatory bodies that legitimize and authorize certain utterances while disregarding others. Comparative Media Studies are concerned with studying every element of an argument, not just the text. This includes things like the design, layout, and delivery platforms of work. By examining these elements, we can better understand how knowledge is created, as well as the world views that are reflected in a work. With digital media, we are prompted to consider questions like who is an author, what is a work, and what constitutes a text, since anyone can potentially be a reader or writer. As Roland Barthes noted, in a digital environment, any text is both readerly and writerly.

Comparative Data Studies
Google has digitized and indexed over ten million books, which allows scholars to conduct more complex searches and analyze patterns in large-scale cultural datasets. The field of "cultural analytics" has emerged in the past five years, using high-end computational analysis and data visualization to dissect such datasets. This includes historical data that has been digitized, such as every shot in the films of Vertov or Eisenstein, or contemporary, real-time data flows such as tweets, SMS messaging, or search trends. Comparative Data Studies use computational tools to enhance literary scholarship by creating models, visualizations, maps, and semantic webs of data that are too large to read or comprehend using unaided human faculties. This method also broadens the canon of objects and cultural material under consideration, including cultural objects originally constituted as singular objects in one medium, now digitized, marked-up, accessible, and shareable in multiple formats and on a variety of platforms.

'Born digital' objects such as blogs, videos, web pages, music, maps, photographs, or hypermedia artifacts provide data for analysis and instantiate new forms of knowledge creation and curation. Scholars like Lev Manovich and Noah Wardrip-Fruin have worked on cultural analytics to bring the tools of high-end computational analysis and data visualization to dissect large-scale cultural datasets. Jerome McGann's analysis of "radiant textuality" argues that digital books exist in "N-Dimensional Space" since the archive of digital objects and exchanges can be expanded in both spatial and temporal terms. The "data" of Comparative Data Studies is constantly expanding in terms of volume, data type, production and reception platform, and analytic strategy.


Comparative Authorship and Platform Studies
The internet and advancements in technology have lowered barriers for people to participate in creating and sharing content, as well as developing software. This has led to a participatory web known as Web 2.0, where users are actively engaged in producing, annotating, and evaluating digital media and software through collaborative authorship, peer-to-peer sharing, and crowd-sourced evaluation. James Boyle, in his book "The Public Domain: Enclosing the Commons of the Mind," warns about the danger of failed sharing due to restrictions and enclosures placed on the creative commons by corporate entities. This is a central argument of the Digital Humanities Manifesto, which aims to perform collaborative authorship using platforms such as the blogging engine, Commentpress.

In the domain of Comparative Authorship and Platform Studies, design, interactivity, navigation strategies, and collaboration are critical issues that literary scholars must consider. Scholars cannot simply hand off their content to publishers for layout, design, editing, printing, and dissemination in the digital world. Choices of the interface, interactivity, database design, navigation, access, and dissemination are all part of how arguments are staged in the digital world. Vectors is a multimodal, multimedia humanities journal that explores the complex interrelation between form and content, underscoring the immersive and experiential dimensions of emerging scholarly vernaculars across media platforms. Scholars work closely with designers, technologists, and the Vectors editorial staff to develop appropriate interfaces, database schemas, navigation features, and content types that instantiate an argument while preserving the authority of peer review. The publication platform foregrounds collaborative authorship and public feedback through threaded discussion forums and annotation features.

In summary, the internet and advancements in technology have democratized the ability to create and share content and develop software. However, corporate entities may seek to control the creative commons. Scholars must consider design, interactivity, navigation strategies, and collaboration in the digital world, and Vectors is an example of a publication platform that foregrounds collaborative authorship and public feedback. Scholars cannot simply hand off their content to publishers, and choices of the interface, interactivity, database design, navigation, access, and dissemination are all critical considerations in the digital world. James Boyle and the Digital Humanities Manifesto are two examples of scholars who have raised important issues in this area.

The article discusses the changing landscape of academic knowledge production and dissemination in the post-print era. Comparative Literature in the Age of Digital Humanities: On Possible Futures for a Discipline- Todd Presner

This blog is a response to a task assigned by Dr. Dilip Barad Sir. The syllabus of the Department of English, MKBU includes paper no.- 208 Comparative Literature and Translation Studies which includes around 9 articles. We (students) are assigned a task of classroom presentation of assigned articles in a pair. In this blog, we are supposed to write abstracts, key points/arguments, and concluding remarks on all two articles of Unit 2 of the paper Comparative Literatures and Translation Studies. It also includes the recording of class presentations presented by respective students. Comparative Literature in the Age of Digital Humanities:
On Possible Futures for a Discipline
Todd Presner

The purpose of this chapter is to provide some preliminary signposts for figuring out what Digital Humanities means for the Humanities generally and for Comparative Literature more specifically.

After five hundred years of print and the massive transformations in society and culture that it unleashed, we are in the midst of another watershed moment in human history that is on par with the invention of the printing press or perhaps the discovery of the New World. The state of knowledge completely changed, providing the conditions of possibility for the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Age of Humanism, and the rise of mass media. the opening up of the New World, Innovations in print technology became the very instrument for producing, sharing, and transforming humanistic and scientific knowledge.

Historicizing these technologies, one which spans the history of seafaring and voyages of discovery to the development of the “ new ” media of radio, film, and television, the construction of the infrastructure of the Internet, the posting of the first web pages, and the explosion of real-time social networking on handheld devices. In this regard, every technology has a dialectical underbelly, facilitating the potential democratization of information and exchange, on the one hand, and the ability to exercise exclusionary control and violence on the other.

Nicholas Negroponte in his book Being Digital- Internet. These technologies of networking and connection do not necessarily bring about the ever-greater liberation of humankind. will not only be used to enhance education, spread democracy, and enable global communication but will likely be used to perpetrate violence and even orchestrate genocide in much the same way that the radio and the railway did in the last century.

Or as Paul Gilroy analyzed- voyages of conquest, enslavement, and destruction. Indeed, this is why any discussion of technology cannot be separated from a discussion about formations of power and instrumentalized authority.

We barely appreciate the profound disciplinary, methodological, and institutional shifts that are occurring as print culture is enhanced and also displaced by the emergence of natively digital culture as contemporary changes are happening rapidly.

N. Katherine Hayles pondering over possible futures for comparative studies wonders how to rouse ourselves from the ‘somnolence [of] five hundred years of print’ in the second decade of the 21st century. While the materiality of the vast majority of artifacts that we study as professors of Comparative Literature has been print, the burgeoning field of electronic literature has necessitated a reconceptualization of “ materiality as the interplay between a text ’s physical characteristics and its signifying practices, ” something that, as Hayles argues, allows us to consider texts as “ embodied entities ” and still foreground interpretative practices

Situating the transformation of the literary in relation to a set of issues that have emerged over the past decade in the “ Digital Humanities” necessitates a fundamental rethinking of how knowledge gets created, what knowledge looks (or sounds, or feels, or tastes) like, who gets to create knowledge, when it is “ done ” or published, how it gets authorized and disseminated, and how it involves and is made accessible to a significantly broader (and potentially global) audience.

The Humanities of the twenty-first century, have the potential to generate, legitimate, and disseminate knowledge in radically new ways, on a scale never before realized, involving technologies and communities that rarely (if ever) were engaged in a global knowledge-creation enterprise.

Digital Humanities is an interdisciplinary practice for creating, applying, interpreting, interrogating, and hacking both new and old information technologies. Digital Humanities is an outgrowth and expansion of the traditional scope of the Humanities, not a replacement or rejection of humanistic inquiry. The role of the humanist is more critical at this historic moment than perhaps ever before, as our cultural legacy as a species migrates to digital formats and our relation to knowledge, cultural material, technology, and society at large is radical re - conceptualized. After all, it is to humanists that we should turn to help us to understand, critique, compare, and historicize.

Jeffrey Schnapp in “ Digital Humanities Manifesto, ”- it is essential that humanists assert and insert themselves into the twenty-first-century cultural wars, which are largely being defined, fought, and won by corporate interests. It questions humanists If new technologies are dominated and controlled by corporate and entertainment interests, how will our cultural legacy be rendered in new media formats? By whom and for whom?

Taking Robert Darnton’s assessment seriously that we are now in the fifth decade of the fourth information age in the history of humankind. Although the Internet is barely forty years old and the World Wide Web is barely two decades old, it is striking to ponder the sheer volume of “ data ” already produced. It is evident that we are producing, sharing, consuming, and archiving exponentially more cultural material, particularly textual and visual data, than ever before in the history of our species. While much of this data is not “ literature ” and may not be studied under the conventional academic rubric of “ Comparative Literature, ” it brings into stark relief the constitution of the tiny canon of print artifacts with which the field currently engages.

Presner's point, following Franco Moretti’s provocation, is to consider Comparative Literature as a “ problem ” that “ asks for a new critical method ” to analyze both the print world in the digital age and the digital world in the post-print age. The “ problem ” of Comparative Literature is to figure out how to take seriously the range of new authoring, annotation, and sharing platforms that have transformed global cultural production.

The central issue is the fact that the artifacts constituted by the world of print are comparatively different – in terms of material composition, authorship, meaning-making, circulation, reading practices, viewing habits, navigation features, embodiment, interactivity, and expressivity – from those artifacts constituted by digital technologies and which “ live ” in various digital environments.
It is to insist on the multiplicity of media and the varied processes of mediation and remediation in the formation of cultural knowledge and the idea of the literary. Just “ studying ” the technologies and their impact, Presner believes that we must actively engage with, design, create, critique, and finally hack the environments and technologies that facilitate this research, render this world as a world, and produce knowledge about who we are, where we live, and what that means.

We will have to design and employ new tools to thoughtfully sift through, analyze, map, and evaluate the unfathomably large deluge of data and cultural material that the digital age has already unleashed.

Moretti has already indicated one possible way of doing this in his articulation of “ distant reading, ” a specific form of analysis that focuses on larger units and fewer elements in order to reveal “ their overall interconnection [through] shapes, relations, structures. Forms. Models. ”

Hayles points out in her recent study on the transforming power of digital humanities, even if we were to read a book a day for our entire adult life, the upper end of the number of books that can be read is about twenty - five thousand, and this does not even take into consideration the reading and composition of digital forms of data and cultural material.

The question that we need to confront in the fourth information age concerns the specificity of the digital medium vis - à - vis other media formats, the various kind of cultural knowledge produced, the ways of analyzing it, the various platforms that support it, and, finally, the modes of authorship and reception that facilitate new architectures of participation and new architectures of power.

Presner discusses the three futures for “ Comparative Literature ” in the Digital Age.


Comparative Media Studies
Digital media are always already hypermedia and hypertextual. Both of the foregoing terms were originally coined in 1965 by the visionary media theorist, Theodor Nelson, in his early articulations of the conceptual infrastructure for the World Wide Web.

For Nelson, hypertext is a:

Body of written or pictorial material interconnected in such a 
complex way that it could not conveniently be presented or 
represented on paper [ ... ] Such a system could grow 
indefinitely, gradually including more and more of the world ’ s 
written knowledge.


Hypertextual or hypermedia documents deploy a multiplicity of media forms in aggregate systems that allow for annotation, indefinite growth, mutability, and non-linear navigation. comparative studies investigate all media as information and knowledge systems that are bound up with histories of power, institutions, and governing and regulatory bodies which legitimate and authorize certain utterances while screening out and dismissing others.

Comparative Media Studies also imply that the output or scholarly “ work ” is not uni - medial and might not even be textual. It draws attention to the design and interrelationship of every unit of the argument, whether a page, a folio, a database field, XML metadata, a map, a film still, or something else. Comparative Media Studies enable us to return to some of the most fundamental questions of our field with new urgency: Who is an author? What is work? What constitutes a text, particularly in an environment in which any text is readerly and writerly by potentially anyone?


Comparative Data Studies
By the work of Lev Manovich and Noah Wardrip - Fruin, the field of “ cultural analytics ” has emerged over the past five years to bring the tools of high-end computational analysis and data visualization to dissect large-scale cultural datasets.

Comparative Data Studies allow us to use the computational tools of cultural analytics to enhance literary scholarship precisely by creating models, visualizations, maps, and semantic webs of data that are simply too large to read or comprehend using unaided human faculties. performing “ close ” and “ distant ” analyses of data, Comparative Data Studies also radically broaden the canon of objects and cultural material.

As Jerome McGann argues with elegant analysis of “radiant textuality, ” the differences between the codex and the electronic versions of the Oxford English Dictionary, for example, illustrate that the electronic OED is “ a meta book [that has] consumed everything that the code OED provides and reorganized it at a higher level ” adding value through new indexing and search mechanisms, hyperlinks, editing and annotation tools, and even reading strategies.

The “ data ” of Comparative Data Studies is constantly expanding in terms of volume, data type, production and reception platform, and analytic strategy.


Comparative Authorship and Platform Studies
While the radically “ democratizing ” claims of the web and information technologies should certainly be critically interrogated. We no longer just “ browse ” and passively consume predigested content but are actively engaged in the production, annotation, and evaluation of digital media and software thanks to the open-source movement.

The real danger is not unauthorized file sharing but “ failed to share” due to enclosures and

strictures placed upon the world of the creative commons. The knowledge platforms cannot be simply “ handed off ” to the technicians, publishers, and librarians, as if the curation of knowledge – the physical and virtual arrangement of information as an argument through multimedia constellations – is somehow not the domain of literary scholars. While preserving the authority of peer review, the publication platform foregrounds collaborative authorship and public feedback through threaded discussion forums and annotation features.

This emphasis on openness and collaboration is, of course, nowhere more apparent than with Wikipedia, a revolutionary knowledge production and editing platform. While it is easy to dismiss Wikipedia as amateurish and unreliable or to scoff at its lack of scholarly rigor.

Presner believes-
Wikipedia represents a truly innovative, global, multilingual, collaborative knowledge - generating community and platform for authoring, editing, distributing, and versioning knowledge.

To date, it has more than three million content pages, more than three hundred million edits, over ten million registered users, and articles in forty - seven languages.

Conclusion:
Presner concludes by suggesting that it is actually a model for rethinking collaborative research and the dissemination of knowledge in the Humanities and at institutions of higher learning, which are all - too - often fixated on individual training, discrete disciplines, and isolated achievement and accomplishment.

At this moment in its short life, Wikipedia is already the most comprehensive, representative, and pervasive participatory platform for knowledge production ever created by humankind. In my opinion, that is worth some pause and reflection, perhaps even by scholars in a future disciplinary incarnation of Comparative Literature.

Gian Course E- Literature- Learning Outcome

Electronic Literature and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Theory and Practice of Digital Storytelling

Recently I attended an Online course on the Gian platform on ‘Electronic Literature and Artificial Intelligence (AI): Theory and Practice of Digital Storytelling’ hosted by Prof. M. Rizwan Khan, The Department of English Aligarh University, Aligrah, U.P. in a virtual mode. This blog deals with my learning out of attending this interesting course.
What is Gian?
Gian is Global Initiative of Academic Networks. It is Govt. of India’s approved new program in Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs, internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment the country's existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India's scientific and technological capacity to global excellence. The basic knowledge I had about Digital Humanities and Electronic Literature.
The title, Digital Humanities contains two terms- digital and hiumanitites.it combines traditional and modern modes of critical understanding. Humanities in its traditional Avatar consists of various text-based disciplines which study classics, literature, philosophy, performing arts, media and communication and cultural studies. Digital Humanities is a new variant which uses informational Technology as a method of research in traditional human disciplines like literature and the performing arts.


Digitalising Humanities, Literature is always helpful for easy and fast reading and references along with digitizing text increases its availability. We know how tiring it is to go to the library and search for books. Ctrl F works as a magic wand to easily take the reference of what we want in a particular book if it's digitalised.

Today technology is also able to create literature, generate literature which has emerged as ‘generative Literature’.

Electronic Literature

There is no specific definition of E- Literature. Basically, Pdfs, Written and posted can not be considered E- literature. Electronic literature is coded literature.

N. Katherine Hayles defines electronic literature as "'digital born' (..) and (usually) meant to be read on a computer", clarifying that this does not include e-books and digitized print literature. A definition offered by the Electronic literature Organization (ELO) states electronic literature "refers to works with an important literary aspect that takes advantage of the capabilities and contexts provided by the stand-alone or networked computer".

This can include hypertext fiction, animated poetry (often called kinetic poetry) and other forms of digital poetry, literary chatbots, computer-generated narratives or poetry, art installations with significant literary aspects, interactive fiction and literary uses of social media.

E- literature has no specific author, it is collaborative (Reading + Writing). A reader itself can select what he/ she wants to read and after which chapter what to read. There is no continuation. Every reader forms his/ her own story. It’s a non- sequential reading, pioneer less narratology, multilinear, plotless, anti- novel, lack of particular meaning and interpretations keep on changing.

Digital humanities in a way saves our time of re- reading and helps us to come to our conclusion.

E-Lit was founded by the Electronic Literature Organization in 1999.
Elit- written with a digital device and need a digital device to be read/experienced.

Digital writing: a non-linear type of writing.

Precursors- its roots in experimentalist writing and the work of European vanguards such as Laurence Sterne, Stephane Mallarmé, Tristan Tzara, T.S. Eliot, William Burroughs, Julio Cortazar, Italo Calvino, George Perec, and Marc Saporta, as well as OULIPO, Futurism, and Dadaism.
Formal ideas crucial to digital communication, such as abandonment of linearity, narrative fragmentation, montage, and multimedia convergence.

What is Digital Humanities?
Use of Digital tools in the analysis of language, literature, visual and performing arts. Use of computer- related technologies in analysis, research, production and publication.

First work relating DH in the 1940s by Father Busa Index Thomisticus.
DH involves collaborative, transdisciplinary and computationally engaged research, teaching and publishing.
Features- Accessibility, Malleability and Interdisciplinary.
Two waves of Digital Humanities. First wave work was quantitative; second wave work is qualitative, interpretive, experimental, emotive, generative in character.

“Storytelling” is considered the realm of those who work in communication. For them rhetoric, for example, does not seem to have anything to do with literature. Not even narratology! It is not unusual to hear 'communicators' take on the authorship of things already said by, for example, Aristotle.

Digital Storytelling
Storytelling does not mean 'telling stories', it is more like “talking through stories”
“Telling a story” does not mean to create a story. Storytelling consists in 'creating' representations' (textual, visual, acoustic, perceptive) made in order to move, to touch, and to establish a relationship with the audience.

Storytelling is the shaping of a reality in order to connect people/readership to it, shaping an experience for the audience.

eLIT is made of process + experience
Digital + storytelling = digital media and narration
Narration/Literature: content + form + medium

Digital Media: different technologies + reading/writing surfaces/interfaces + interaction

Create emotions in the audience!
Stories are used to inspire, to persuade.
The one who writes for a digital environment is an experience designer

Types of stories:
Sequential: the different dramaturgical lines of the story follow each other without overlapping

Parallel: the different dramaturgical lines of the story run side by side without ever clashing in the different platforms

Simultaneous: multiple lines begin and end by sharing the same portion of the story across multiple media

Non-linear: storylines are fragmented and reconstructed in deliberately disjointed sequences

Case Study:

Definition of Hypertext as a Topographic form of writing; Peculiarities of a Non-Linear writing; Flowcharts; Hypertext; Flowcharts and Hyperlinks.

While writing digital media, we have to keep in mind the process of reading.

A book is organized linearly and hierarchically (in chapters; you read one page after the other); a digital textuality is not! Instead of linearity we talk about non-linear storytelling, even if the reading process is sequential (that is one Lexia after the other). This form of writing is called “hypertext”. The term was coined in 1965 by Ted Nelson

"non-sequential writing -- text that branches and allows choices to the reader, best read at an interactive screen. As popularly conceived, this is a series of text chunks connected by links which offer the reader different pathways"

The main feature that distinguishes hypertext from other literary works is, what Jay Bolter calls, the space of writing.

Michael Joyce, Of two Minds, states:
“Electronic writing is both a visual and verbal description”, says Bolter, “not the writing of a place, but rather a writing with places, spatially realized topics […] signs and structures on the computer screen that have no easy equivalent in speech.” For Bolter, hypertext’s “electronic symbols […] seem to be an extension of a network of ideas in the mind itself.”

Career opportunity in AI is directly proportional to Advancement. Employability skills can be defined as the Transferable skills needed by an individual to make them employable. Communication and interpersonal problem solving skills, organizational skills, team working etc.

What is AI?
Artificial intelligence is a field that combines computer science and robust datasets to enable problem solving, a human human cognitive capabilities such as reasoning, recognizing patterns, categorizing objects and similar, identify images and so on, it's an interdisciplinary enterprise.


How does the AI system work?
Machine learning algorithms are the heart of AI.


It is a structured training set carefully curated by humans.
AI is widespread. It is an integral part of everyday life and culture Smart home, devices, E-mail filtering, product recommendation, etc. marketing and e-commerce, Healthcare, Automotive hiring and education.

AI will lead to a decline in jobs for humans but it is an emerging discipline with the new demand in the workforce. Challenges in the AI implementation is the need for more AI skills and training. We need to invest more in AI courses. This discipline prefers a dynamic job profile that requires interdisciplinary knowledge and has a Digital participation.

AI Is to support human work instead of the replacement. human beings and machines need to work together in partnership, the triangle of Technology, human and Organization. human creativity, nonlinear thinking, common sense, the ability to make decisions, emotional intelligence and communicative and special abilities cannot be replaced.

AI in the future will be integrated into all disciplines including music, literature, etc. humanities discipline not only Engineering courses. Which will increase the scope of employability.
